Energy Company Obligation (ECO)

Supporting the poorest and most vulnerable households in the UK

Anesco’s ECO Installer Network

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) is placed on all large energy suppliers by the Government and requires them to help reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty by improving the energy efficiency of some of the country’s most vulnerable households.

Anesco is the UK’s largest provider of ECO services. We act as a managing agent, helping energy suppliers meet their legal obligations under the scheme, with the improvements delivered through our nationwide network of skilled installers.

What is ECO?

The ECO programme was introduced by the Government in 2013 and applies to all energy suppliers who have more than 250,000 domestic customers, or provide more than 400 gigawatt hours of electricity or more than 2,000 gigawatt hours of gas.

Under their ECO obligations, suppliers including British Gas, EDF energy, NPower, SSE and EON must deliver a range of energy saving measures. These measures are designed to reduce the carbon emissions and energy expenditure of eligible properties.

Each energy supplier has individual targets that must be met, or they face being handed a substantial fine. These targets are based on their share of the domestic gas and electricity market.

The scheme is designed for those on low incomes and properties in poorer and more rural communities, or with solid walls and hard-to-treat cavity walls.  A wide range of energy efficiency measures can be installed under ECO, including insulation, heating measures and connections to district heating systems.

The result of the programme is reduced energy bills for tenants and improved energy efficiency, while overall the scheme supports the government to achieve its targets under the Climate Change Act.
