What is Ground Source Heat?

GSHP achieve high levels of efficiency for space and water heating in both domestic and commercial properties. They work by extracting heat from the earth’s surface, which absorbs a large portion of solar radiation and remains at a highly stable temperature all year round.

To extract solar energy from both solar radiation and rainfall, ground collectors consisting of flexible plastic pipes are buried in the earth, either horizontally or vertically.

Horizontal collector systems extract the heat from the soil by means of lengths of pipe that are buried approximately 1.5 metres below the ground, typically in a helix wound configuration known as ‘slinkies’.

Vertical collector systems involve a ground collector being fed into a borehole, drilled between 60 and 200 metres in the ground and are ideal for sites were limited land is available. Boreholes can be located almost anywhere on a site providing ground conditions permit and there is adequate spacing between them. They can also be built on or landscaped over, providing access is maintained.

In both cases, the length of the collector pipe is directly related to the amount of heat required to be extracted. Also, the amount of heat that can be extracted is related to the surface area of the collector pipework and the thermal properties of the ground.
